David Fleay Wildlife Park, Burleigh Heads

Nestled in the heart of Burleigh Heads, David Fleay’s is a small wildlife park with a difference! Stroll through the tranquil surroundings to experience some of Queensland’s natural habitats—rainforest to bushland—and meet some of the State’s unique and threatened species—Fleay’s is the only wildlife park visitors can see the shy bridled nailtail wallaby, thought to be extinct for over 30 years!

Check out the Nocturnal House, koalas, various species of wallabies, cassowaries, dingoes, emus and kangaroos. There are reptile shows and animal feedings to watch as well. The mangrove boardwalk is a great pram friendly stroll too.

Near the entrance you’ll find the Reptile House, home to a number of snakes and lizards, and shortly down the path you’ll find the Nocturnal House. Here day and night is switched around, so you can watch these nocturnal creatures during their nighttime, when they are most active! Get there at 9.30am for the start of their evening, as they emerge from their daytime rest and begin hunting for food and exploring their enclosures. Wally the Platypus is a highlight here!

The map recommends you go clockwise around the park, however you are welcome to journey whichever way you please. Following the clockwise journey, you’ll pass the amphitheatre which hosts the Fleays in Flight show (held around 1pm each day), where the large birds of prey wow visitors with their spectacular wing spans and speed. Further you’ll see a number of wallaby and tree kangaroo enclosures, the cassowaries and the dingoes. Finally you’ll reach the crocodile enclosures where you can see both freshwater and estuarine (salt water) crocodiles. At the end of the boardwalks you’ll find Wallaby Way, where you can get up close with the wallabies and emu! There are also a number of koalas, and water birds in the large pond in the middle.

You only need 1.5-2hrs to complete the circuit, but can easily stretch the day out by joining the Ranger talks, and enjoying a bite to eat at the onsite cafe.
