Navigating the early years is always a roller coas Navigating the early years is always a roller coaster ride, the successes and the failures, the ah ha! moments and the oh no! moments. There is so much that our little people need to learn from us and our surroundings, and sometimes we can wonder if we're doing enough, or doing it the right way. Common sense usually stands in most of these early years teaching moments, but we do also forget that what seems simple to us, can be a huge challenge for them. I know I personally have drawn on a number of resources including podcasts, books, parenting experts and childhood development experts to ensure I'm giving my children the best start in life.

Liz Giovas is a parenting and social skills specialist who reached out to me recently to tell me about a book she has written, called Socially Starting Out. It's designed especially for parents starting out on the journey to teach their children social skills, and is perfect for parents with children aged 1-7 years. It's not a boring textbook with all the theory laid out for you to pour through and try and interpret. This is a practical guide, written in a conversational style, that provides tips and guidance on how to teach our kids to be the best they can be. I love that it starts with the very basics (most applicable to the youngest age group), and works gradually through the social skills in line with developmental stages. It basically grows with your child if you start this with a 1 year old! It covers social skills across a variety of areas including manners, movement, meal times, safety, interacting with others and independence, all with concise chapters that you can pick up and put down as you need. Socially Starting Out is a great book to have on the resource list as a place to go when you're not quite sure the best way to teach something, or want to be sure your approach is realistic! If you're interested in more info, jump over to @shininglifeskills website and use my code MLDD20 to grab it for just $20!

@digittamborinemountain is Queensland’s first mi @digittamborinemountain is Queensland’s first mini excavator park for kids big and small! Here, you will sit in the drivers seat of real excavator machinery and participate in construction-inspired activities. It’s fully instructed fun for kids and their parents too!

Here is an overview of what you can expect in the four zones:
👷‍♂️The Dig Zone – get trained on a 1.7 tonne excavator, digging in the earth.
👷‍♀️The Demolition Zone – the challenge is to use the wrecking ball to knock over the Dig IT towers with a BANG.
👷‍♂️The Croc Zone – on a 1.7 tone excavator, using precision our diggers will be trying to hook a croc!
👷‍♀️The RC Zone – using state of the art remote control machines like dozers, dump trucks, excavators and rear loaders the kids will get to use machines, just like on the work site.

Children aged under 5 are able to participate on the lap of an adult. Children aged over 5yrs can operate the machinery solo, and may have a parent supervisor if required. The parent supervisor will stand on a special platform beside the machinery but you are not allowed to touch the machinery – your job is to talk to them and give verbal guidance if needed.

We had so much fun! It really is a great new addition to the many family friendly activities on offer at Thunderbird Park. I've got a full review with my thoughts on how it went, details on what to expect in your session, and what to keep in mind when booking at the link in bio and stories.

Today we headed up to Brisbane to check out @imagi Today we headed up to Brisbane to check out @imaginator_au, a new form of immersive play where imagination and technology collide to create a stunning audio-visual play experience from the future! As you walk through a series of rooms with different installations, it's up to you how you interact with the display and how long you stay and play! Immerse yourself in shimmering light sculptures and vast architectural inflatables. Enter the interactive cave or the multi-dimensional light maze. Step inside a giant infinity bubble or pass through a black hole hovering in space!

We spent just under an hour here, moving back and forth between the rooms as the kids showed interest. I wasn't sure how good it would be for kids, but they honestly had the best time. Aside from not touching the mirrors, they are allowed to touch, play and interact with everything - and it's all designed to spark the imagination. Our favourites included the Light Vines, the Slide, the Glow Balls and the Mirror Room. They probably played for 10min in each the light vines and glow balls!

Tickets are a little pricey, but for a special family day out, birthday or school holiday treat, I think it's reasonable. While you can do the whole thing in 15min, if you really engage with each space you'll easily spend an hour there!

Located at the Maritime Museum, we parked at South Bank Parklands (closest and cheapest). Imaginator is on until 9 July!

Adults: $29.95
Kids (3-12yrs): $27.95
Under 3yrs FREE
Family (4 people or more): $22 per person

Have you had concerns about your child's hearing? Have you had concerns about your child's hearing? I'm currently getting support for my 2yo who has a speech delay, and one of the first things that was suggested was a children's hearing test. Aside from the newborn hearing test, did you know there is no recommended hearing check until your child is 4yrs!?

Coastal Audiology is run by Sara McGrath, a Gold Coast mum of two with extensive experience in children's audiology, including working in GCUH and running hearing tests at daycare centres. She reached out to me recently and I was shocked to hear how often hearing issues go unnoticed.

So what can we keep an eye out for? Signs your child might have a hearing concern include:
- saying 'huh' or what more than usual
- tv or music up louder than usual
- “dazed” or “zoned out” at childcare
- change in speech pronunciation
- pulling at ear, or saying it’s blocked.

It's also really important to get your child assessed:
- if they are attending speech therapy or if they have a speech delay
- as part of the 4yo health check
- if you have behaviour or listening concerns
- if there is a history of ear infections.

If your child has normal hearing, but still seems to have difficulty hearing, your child could have an auditory processing disorder. Signs include difficulty following more than one instruction at a time, misunderstanding teachers and tasks, or issues with reading, writing and spelling.

@coastalears offers the only specialised combined testing and rehabilitation program on the Gold Coast for Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD), working with schools and other allied health such as OT, Speech pathologists and psychologists to diagnose, manage and treat this.

Finding a reliable provider who is able to cater to children is always a great thing!! Sara was calm, understanding and easily adapted when things weren't going to plan, making my 2yo feel comfortable during testing. Hearing tests are $150, however if you get a GP referral you can get a medicare rebate of just under $50. Coastal Audiology operates in Southport, Burleigh and Byron Bay.

Wishing all the mums a very happy Mother's Day! My Wishing all the mums a very happy Mother's Day! My early present was to spend an afternoon at the @babygiveback annual High Tea yesterday with some amazing mummas, treating ourselves to some fancy frocks and bubbly drinks. It's always an incredible event, raising money for a very important Gold Coast charity. I was so proud to have organised 2 tables of attendees!

If you haven't heard of Baby Give Back, they are committed to helping families in crisis because they believe every child deserves a safe start in life. Their items range from nappies and wipes, through to prams, cots and car seats and everything in between. If you are ever clearing out your baby or children's things, please keep them in mind for your donations!
How do you store your school craft? Storage boxes, How do you store your school craft? Storage boxes, scrapbooks, folders, the bin?? I'm telling you, this is THE BEST way to store those school memories!

Are you a photobook fan? I swear, I'll turn anything into a photobook if I can!
