I clearly remember the days when it only cost $7 to see a movie, and you went reasonably often because there were some great stories being told on the big screen. These days you can pay up to $30 for one ticket! One great option on the Gold Coast as ticket prices started creeping up was to go to the drive-in theatre at Yatala, where you could camp out in the boot of your car with a blanket and the radio on and get a double feature for the same price as a regular movie. But now, even the drive-in is having to increase its prices (I get it, land is at a premium) and this once budget-friendly family option is also fast becoming a luxury.
However, did you know that there are still a few ways to see movies FOR FREE on the Gold Coast? Yes, it is actually possible to watch a latest release movie, for free! Ok, I’ve made you read long enough, drum roll please… here we go!
Movies Under the Stars
Taking the kids to the movies sounds like a great option to keep them occupied, but the $$$ soon add up when each kid wants a popcorn and a frozen coke too! That’s where Gold Coast City Council’s Movies Under the Stars is saving family budgets this Summer. Expect family friendly movies each week at a different park across the Gold Coast. Take advantage of the fantastic food truck options or pack a picnic for the family – the choice is yours! The schedule of movies and locations can be accessed here.
Star Gold Coast Cinema
This is the one you’ve all been waiting for – you can watch a new release movie, in a comfortable cinema, with or without children, FOR FREE! Most Monday’s and Thursdays at different times, the big screen comes to The Star Gold Coast, where favourite new release movies are screened free for members of The Star Club. Wait, you say, you didn’t tell me there was a catch! Well, yes, you need to be a member of The Star Club, but this is also free and super easy to sign up to (you’ll also get emailed heaps of great dining and entertainment offers throughout the year, so it’s a no-brainer really!). If you really didn’t want to be a member, it costs $5 to see the movie per ticket, which is still pretty amazing. There are ‘various session times each Monday and Thursday. You can check out the schedule here.
