The Sanctuary
Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is a lush 27-hectare wildlife park where conservation, education and unforgettable animal encounters come together. As one of the Gold Coast’s most iconic attractions, the Sanctuary is home to hundreds of native and exotic animals, with every visit helping to support wildlife conservation and the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital.
There is so much to see and do. Cuddle a koala, hand-feed friendly kangaroos, book a behind-the-scenes Wildlife Hospital tour or simply wander the leafy pathways discovering Australian wildlife around every corner.
One of our favourite areas is Lost Valley, where elevated boardwalks wind through lush rainforest habitats filled with lemurs, cotton-top tamarins, capybaras, red pandas, binturongs, exotic reptiles and free-flying birds. Don’t miss the impressive crocodile habitat while you’re there.
Another must-visit precinct is Outback Springs in Kangaroo Country. This beautifully themed area celebrates the Australian outback with shady walking paths, native animals and interactive experiences, including gemstone panning. The centrepiece is The Homestead, a charming Queenslander-inspired venue overlooking the kangaroo paddock. Whether you’re stopping in for lunch or simply taking a break, it’s a lovely spot to relax while watching kangaroos laze nearby.
Be sure to check the daily schedule for the famous Free Flight Bird Show, where some of Australia’s most spectacular birds soar just metres overhead. Younger visitors will also love the Blinky Bill shows, with extra performances often added during school holidays and special events.
The miniature train is both a practical way to explore the Sanctuary and an attraction in itself. It’s pram-friendly, making it easy to travel between precincts while giving little legs a well-earned break.
Extinction Trail
Take a step back in time on the Extinction Trail, where life-sized dinosaurs and ancient megafauna bring Australia’s prehistoric past to life. This immersive walk-through experience features moving dinosaurs, fascinating prehistoric creatures and interactive displays that make learning about life millions of years ago fun for all ages.
It’s a favourite with dinosaur-loving kids and a great way to break up your day exploring the Sanctuary, with plenty of photo opportunities along the winding trail.
Wild Island Playground
Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary isn’t just about the animals. Wild Island is one of the best playgrounds on the Gold Coast and is worth allowing plenty of time to explore.
Kids can cool off in the splash park with timed water jets, streams and waterfalls before tackling the adventure playground, complete with rope bridges, climbing nets, shaded slides and a flying fox. Interactive play elements also teach children about local rainforest creatures, including spiders and other fascinating creepy crawlies.
Parents are well catered for too. The playground is surrounded by mature shade trees and plenty of seating, while the spacious parents’ room includes private feeding areas, change tables, a toddler play space, kitchenette and family-friendly amenities, making it an easy place to stop and recharge before continuing your adventure.
