Christmas Time: Reindeer Food

A sprinkle of magic Reindeer Food on Christmas Eve is guaranteed to help Santa and his reindeer find your house to deliver presents! While you can buy some in shops now, it’s not always animal friendly (please, don’t use glitter!!), and it’s so easy to make some yourself instead. Whip some of this up and be sure to sprinkle it on the lawn before bedtime on Christmas Eve.

What you need:

  • Rolled oats
  • Red & green food dye
  • Baking sprinkles
  • Desiccated coconut
  • Optional: you can replace the coconut and sprinkles with things like cereal (crushed fruit loops are good) and coloured sugar – use what you can find in your pantry!

I mixed up the food dye with the desiccated coconut so I had both red and green coconut. For older children, you could get them to help with this step.

Put all the ingredients out into dishes and provide the child with a mixing bowl. Start with the oats as your base, and then let them mix and match and combine what they would like to feed the reindeers. Having a 2yo, he emptied the entire contents of each dish into the bowl, but older kids might like to pick and choose quantities.

Give the lot a good mix through and then store in a zip lock bag until needed. There is a really lovely poem that you might like to read with the kids on Christmas Eve too!
